Well, crap

Columbia went to #20 Villanova today, which wasn't the best recipe for success, but they finished gamely after a disastrous start, and only lost by 16. You can't get your hopes up when you are a Columbia fan. Well, you can. And I did earlier this season. But let's face it, losing to a ranked team by 16 points isn't so bad.

My other major team, however, is Maryland. And while Maryland's marketing might demand that you Fear the Turtle, right now the Terrapin looks about as fearsome as, well, a terrapin. The latest disaster: American 67, Maryland 59. American. A team which last defeated Maryland in 1926-27. One of those teams intended to be part of College Park's parade of visiting powder puffs.

And here's me in Columbia, MD for Christmas. At least no-one round here will be taunting me.

Always fun when an NCAA minnow wins on the road against a big-conference team. But then, I went to one of those minnow schools. Maybe if I went to Maryland I'd have a different take on it.

I'd be a lot happier if it was Columbia.

It's hard for me to feel sorry for a school that has all those ACC championship, Final Four, and National Championship banners hung up. You do realize, of course, that being a fan of an ACC school -- any ACC school -- is the moral equivalent of being a Yankees fan?

Yeah, Maryland is just like Duke and NC. What state are you from, anyway?

Yeah, I grew up 20 minutes from College Park. What's it to you?

Anyway, I don't see how anyone can watch American vs. Maryland and not cheer for the Eagles. Anything else is like cheering for the box of puppies to get stomped.

So all those years you were hoping for Tampa to beat the Yankees?

I don't like puppies.
