Now we know

Spike Lee is to blame for baseball caps in the wrong colors. I have no objection to caps in abstract colors, or variations on team colors which don't exactly match the on-field version. That's fine. It's things like a black Yankees logo (and isn't it always a Yankees logo?) on a yellow cap with black hoops and a black peak, exactly the same as the 1970s Pittsburgh Pirates wore. That is a total joke.

A tale of three cities

Let me get this straight. This game started in Washington, and was finished in Houston, while the winning pitcher was in Pittsburgh.

As Phil Rizzuto would say: holy cow.

Dock Ellis, RIP

One of the great characters of '70s baseball is gone. Dock Ellis, famous for all sorts of reasons but best known for pitching a no-hitter while on LSD, died yesterday from liver problems.

As well as that no-hitter, he once tried to bean everyone on the Reds lineup in succession. For all that, though, he finished 138-119 in a twelve year career, mostly with the Pittsburgh Pirates, won a World Series, and helped players to avoid and overcome drug problems after his retirement.
